Eiffel Tower climber ‘admitted to psychiatric unit’ – Report

Who is the Eiffel Tower climber? A lot of people have sought to know after a man sparked a mass evacuation of the Eiffel Tower yesterday when he climbed the iconic Paris landmark.

The man, according to reports, is believed to be a Russian and he has been admitted to a psychiatric unit.

The man caused chaos Monday and the closure of the monument to tourists by spending six hours clinging to the outer metal framework of the Eiffel Tower.

So Who is the Eiffel Tower climber? Reports have it that his identity was not disclosed due to security reasons, but he was questioned by police on Tuesday and has now been admitted to the psychiatric hospital of the police, legal sources told AFP.

An investigation has been opened for unauthorised entry into a cultural monument, a judicial source said.

“It is a Russian man who has suicidal tendencies,” said a source close to the case, asking not to be named.

Firemen who had rappelled down from the tower’s third-floor observation deck to near the black-clad climber managed to persuade him to come down.

An Eiffel Tower spokeswoman told Reuters:

“The man entered the tower normally and started to climb once he was on the second floor.”

Streets surrounding the landmark were cleared and closed to the public.

The first two floors of the tower can be reached by lift or stairs, but to go higher than that visitors need to take a lift.

Some 2,500 people who had come to visit the Eiffel Tower had to be evacuated Monday but it reopened as normal on Tuesday.
