Manchester United have been handed a potential blow in their attempts to sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.
United have been keeping close tabs on the 19-year-old ahead of a potential summer swoop but reports in Spain now suggest the youngster has agreed to join Barcelona.
Barca have already raided Ajax for midfielder Frenkie de Jong and it appears they are closing in on the centre-back who has enjoyed a superb season in Amsterdam.
According to Oriol Domenech, talking on the Club de la Mitjanit programme on Esport 3, the finances are in place to get the deal done.
Domenech claims that De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola is in talks with Barcelona representatives in Monaco as they look to thrash out the finer details of the transfer.
Ajax as good as sealed a Dutch domestic double with their 4-1 win over Utrecht on Sunday and De Ligt was asked after the match if he will be moving on at the end of the season.
“I don’t know yet. There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement,” De Ligt told journalists at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
It raises the possibility that he may have played his final game at the stadium after Ajax CEO and United great Edwin van der Sar said: “I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high.”
